CLIMBING IN KUKSIL VALLEY- KHUNJERAB PASS

Climbing in the Koksil Valley, near the Khunjerab Pass on the Pakistan-China border, offers a unique and challenging experience. This part of the Karakoram Range is known for its rugged beauty and high-altitude terrain, with elevations typically above 4,000 meters (13,000 feet) and some peaks over 6,000 meters. The landscape features snow-capped peaks, glaciers, and pristine alpine meadows, ideal for climbers seeking adventure away from commercial routes.

Accessing Koksil Valley involves traveling the Karakoram Highway (KKH) to Sost, the last major town before Khunjerab Pass. From Sost, it’s a short drive followed by a 3-4 hour trek to Base Camp. An entry permit is required as the area is part of Khunjerab National Park, and you’ll need a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from local authorities. Peaks below 6,500 meters don’t require a climbing permit, but those above this height do.

The best seasons for climbing and trekking are spring (April to June) for mild weather and autumn (September to October) for clear skies. The valley also offers skiing from April to May but should be avoided in winter (November to March) due to heavy snowfall and extreme cold.

Koksil Valley is a hidden gem that promises thrilling climbing and stunning wilderness, making it perfect for both climbers and trekkers seeking unforgettable experiences.
