KALASH VALLEY TOUR

The Kalash is a small ethnic community residing in the Hindu-Kush mountains, known as the Kafir Kalash or Kafiristan, which translates to the land of non-Muslims. This community, distinct in its own right, practices a religion, language, and culture that are unique in the world. Their religion shares few similarities with Islam and is believed to have its roots in early Vedic religion.

A trip to Kalash Valley offers a one-of-a-kind experience, immersing visitors in the captivating culture, breathtaking landscapes, and age-old traditions of the Kalash people. The journey begins in Islamabad, from where you can enjoy a scenic drive through the picturesque landscapes of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, passing through lush valleys, rugged mountains, and charming villages. Upon reaching Chitral, take some time to explore the town and its surroundings. Visit the historic Chitral Fort, wander through local markets, and engage with the amiable residents.

Venturing into the remote and enchanting Kalash Valley, home to the Kalash people, provides an opportunity to witness their unique culture, vibrant festivals, and ancient traditions. Explore the traditional Kalash villages of Bumburate, Rumbur, and Birir, nestled amidst the stunning landscapes of the Hindu Kush mountains. Stroll through narrow streets lined with intricately decorated houses adorned with vibrant motifs and symbols. Immerse yourself in the rich customs and culture of the Kalash people, who have preserved their unique way of life for centuries. Engage with the friendly locals to learn about their language, religion, music, dance, and handicrafts.

If your visit coincides with one of the Kalash festivals, such as Chilam Joshi (spring festival), Uchau (autumn festival), Phool (flower festival), or Chomos (winter festival), you’ll have the opportunity to witness colorful celebrations featuring traditional rituals, dances, and music.

Festival dates:

  • Chomos Festival: 12th to 25th December
    Joshi Festival: Around 14-16th May
    Uchal Festival: 20-22nd August
    Phool Festival: 15th October
