The world’s largest glaciated area outside the Polar Regions is located; it is initially difficult to believe, in Pakistan, a basically arid country. But the vast mass of high peaks in the country’s Northern Karakoram mountains assure abundant snowfalls, which are conserved in glaciers at its frozen heights. The heart of this glacial system is Lukpe Lawo, also known as „Snow Lake“, where four huge streams of ice, snow and rock converge, like a giant highway interchange when viewed from air. The trek leads over two of these arms, the glaciers of Biafo and Hispar. They are connected right North of Lukpe Lawo, via the Hispar Pass (5150mts). The trek runs in total for 112 kilometer on ice, either debris covered, blank or snow covered. This is one of the wildest and most impressive treks anywhere in the world, in one of the globe’s remotest corners. We will meet only very few people instead could encounter flocks of markhor and ibex. The Biafo-Hispar traverse is not yet climbing, but the next thing to it. For this reason only people who have trekked very tough routes in other places should consider signing up on this trek.
